How to Deter Fly Tipping Using Barriers and Fencing

Posted on in Fly Tipping, Property Protection, Security

Illegal dumping and fly tipping pose a major problem for property owners across the UK. Vacant properties, construction sites, and industrial facilities often become targets for individuals looking to offload large amounts of waste and unwanted materials.

From the cost of hiring fly-tipping clearance providers to potential environmental hazards and fines, the impact of fly-tipping can be severe. That’s why it’s so important to always secure your property against unauthorised access. All it takes is one lapse in judgement to see debris and waste pile high and leave you, as the property owner, responsible for its clearance and disposal even if you had no part in it accumulating.

At Maltaward, we specialise in supplying robust physical security products like concrete barriers, metal fencing, SITEX screens, steel security doors and access control equipment to deter fly-tipping and keep sites protected. We also have decades of experience providing end-to-end property security services including CCTV and eviction services to deter illegal access, including fly-tipping removals.

Therefore, it’s fair to say that our team understands how to safeguard your empty or vulnerable property.

In this post, we’ll cover some of the most effective fly-tipping security strategies using heavy-duty barriers and fencing products.

Install Perimeter Fencing and Access Gates

The first and most crucial line of defence is a continuous perimeter security fence enclosing the entire property. Opting for tall metal fencing like steel mesh, Heras or jet blast fencing or palisades makes it extremely difficult for trespassers to scale or cut through the barrier.

Pair the fencing with locked entry and exit gates to control all access points. For maximum protection, automated security gates are ideal, preventing unauthorised vehicles from freely entering the premises and disposing of unwanted materials.

Erect Concrete Barriers at Entry Points

Perimeter fencing alone isn’t enough to stop determined fly-tippers driving vehicles through an entrance either strategically or forcefully. Heavy-duty concrete barriers prove invaluable in this case, withstanding collisions and heavy impact.

Temporary Vertical Concrete Blocks (TVCBs), jersey barriers, delta blocks and other types of robust concrete barrier products offer plenty of sturdy resilience against all types of incoming vehicles. Positioning jersey concrete blocks on either side of gate entryways and stacked blocks around high-risk entry zones can prevent unwanted vehicles from gaining entry, while still enabling pedestrian access. As these blocks are immovable without heavy machinery, these will deter any people attempting to fly tip en masse.

Restrict Interior Property Access

Simply securing the outer perimeter may not be enough for larger commercial or industrial vacant properties. Should someone make it past the initial security gate or bypass the front door, any room they have access to could therefore be used for unlawful fly-tipping.

That’s why it’s wise to restrict and zone off different interior areas of the property as well as outer ones like car parks and courtyards when not in use. Using security fencing, locked steel doors and barrier systems, any large, unoccupied spaces within the property itself can be safeguarded from heaps of rubbish from fly tippers.

Hang Clear Warning Signs

Visual warnings and signage scattered around your property – however vast and vacant – can act as a surprisingly effective deterrent to trespassers. Display signs that alert people to CCTV security cameras, blocked entry points, and prosecution warnings for trespassers or those who leave rubbish illegally.

Installing CCTV and real-time monitoring systems throughout your premises will undoubtedly give you more control over who gains access and when. Even if the risk is low, opportunistic fly tippers may be dissuaded if they see heavily guarded properties that are being monitored 24/7.

Car Park Line Marking

I just express our thanks for the short hire of the blockers and the gate and the services provided by Del yesterday.

We have had excellent feedback, not only internally but from our Customer who was holding the event and it would not have gone so smoothly if Del did not play his part so efficiently and professionally.

Everything ran so smoothly.  His Majesty would not have known the amount of work that went into making the event possible not only by the SEGRO team but all of our service partners.

It is not often that feedback is positive but it is important for you to know how grateful we are to you and the team and ask that you thank Del from SEGRO, Felix and personally from myself.
